Huntington's Support Group

My Dad has been diagnosed with Huntington's, and is at the 50% prognosis currently. My Mom is having a hard time coping with the outbursts and confusion lately. I live 200 miles away and am limited with the help I can give them. I am trying to find a support group for families coping with this disease to try and get my Mom an outlet, and answer questions, and to let her know she is not alone. She lives in Ft Lauderdale, FL and I live in Tampa, FL. Can you point me in a direction to help her locate local support groups to help her cope?

I am so very sorry to hear about your Dad. Huntington's Disease is a terrible, terrible disease. I am not surprised to hear that your mother is having a hard time, as behavioral problems very often come along with the disease. You are wise to be thinking about support groups. There is nothing as valuable as being able to exchange ideas and information with people who are walking the same path you are.

The Huntington's Disease Society of America maintains a list of support groups for all States on its website. If there isn't one close enough for you or your mother to get there regularly, there is also a very active Yahoo on-line Huntington's support group you might consider. Many people take part in both on-line and physical support groups, because physical meetings are usually  scheduled fairly far apart. Sometimes you just need someone to talk with right away. An online group is really great for that.
