Remember
the Waltons - That wonderful television family of three
generations who all lived happily ever after in the same house? Gram and Gramps were both in good health, as were the passel of
children. No one had to miss work to take care of anyone
else. No one worried about elder care costs or
residential options, finding a "facility" or catching
a plane in an emergency.
The Waltons weren't real then, and they aren't real now.
Ask
most seniors today if they'd like to, or plan to, live with
their children in the future and you'll get a resounding
"no!"
During
the Depression, the time frame of the Waltons, there weren't
many senior living alternatives. Older family members
either lived on their own or with relatives. The only
alternative was the "poor house."
Today
you have choices. Your elder can stay at home with support. You can look into assisted living or a smaller personal care
home. A skilled nursing home might be the right choice when
medical needs are great. The trick is deciding what would be the
most appropriate choice, and when to make the move. Review the information included on the
following pages, and send me
a note if you don't find answers to
your questions here.
