Dycem: It's the Bee's Knees
When a stroke cost Mike the use of his right hand he had a real problem learning to use his left hand to eat. It didn't help that even after he got a plate with a lip the plate slid all over the table. Mike would get so angry he would push the food away and refuse to eat. When his occupational therapist suggested a Dycem mat things took a turn for the better. Do you have a gadget in your home that before it ended up in your hands you never knew existed, and now you can't live without? Dycem® is one of those things. Dycem is actually the stuff used to make dozens of sanity-saving items that can make our caregiving lives easier, and that can make things easier for our elders, too. Dycem is a non-sticky, non-slip, latex-free material that grips just about anything on both sides so that they won't slip and slide or are easier to grip. Mats made of Dycem can be used in the kitchen and at the table to keep plates and bowls from creeping around. They can keep items from slipping on walker and over-bed trays. Puzzle pieces, telephones, writing paper and games stay put on Dycem mats. Even people stay in place because they won't easily slide forward in wheelchairs or on chairs when they sit on a Dycem mat. Strips can be wound around walker handles, cutlery, grooming tools and any other handle that's hard for someone to hold. For anyone with reduced dexterity such as from arthritis, Parkinson's disease or a stroke, using Dycem can improve independence and reduce accidents requiring clean-up, both of which are what every caregiver needs. The stuff is easy to wipe clean with a damp cloth and can be used for years. It will remain effective so long as it is dry. Some examples of Dycem uses that have proven to be indispensible in our lives:
