Dycem: It's the Bee's Knees
When a stroke cost Mike the use of his right hand he had a real problem learning to use his left hand to eat. It didn't help that even after he got a plate with a lip the plate slid all over the table. Mike would get so angry he would push the food away and refuse to eat. When his occupational therapist suggested a Dycem mat things took a turn for the better.
Do you have a gadget in your home that before it ended up in your hands you never knew existed, and now you can't live without? Dycem® is one of those things. Dycem is actually the stuff used to make dozens of sanity-saving items that can make our caregiving lives easier, and that can make things easier for our elders, too.
Dycem is a non-sticky, non-slip, latex-free material that grips just about anything on both sides so that they won't slip and slide or are easier to grip. Mats made of Dycem can be used in the kitchen and at the table to keep plates and bowls from creeping around. They can keep items from slipping on walker and over-bed trays. Puzzle pieces, telephones, writing paper and games stay put on Dycem mats. Even people stay in place because they won't easily slide forward in wheelchairs or on chairs when they sit on a Dycem mat. Strips can be wound around walker handles, cutlery, grooming tools and any other handle that's hard for someone to hold.
For anyone with reduced dexterity such as from arthritis, Parkinson's disease or a stroke, using Dycem can improve independence and reduce accidents requiring clean-up, both of which are what every caregiver needs.
The stuff is easy to wipe clean with a damp cloth and can be used for years. It will remain effective so long as it is dry.
Some examples of Dycem uses that have proven to be indispensible in our lives:
Rectangular and circular Dycem mats will stay put on flat surfaces, and things placed on them won't slide. You can find mats in several sizes to use as place mats, tray mats or on lap boards to keep items from skidding around. The place mats are also good for small crafts and games, writing, and even for that pet bowl that ends up across the kitchen.
Self-Adhesive Dycem Strips have an adhesive backing so you can wind them around items to provide a non-slip grip. The material is flexible, so it will conform to just about any shape.
An uncut roll of Dycem lets you create the size and shape you need for the purpose at hand. It's available in several colors and roll sizes.
Dycem adhesive feet are handy for stabilizing the telephone, calculator and other small items so they won't slip around while being used. These are especially useful if someone is working on a slanted surface
Use Dycem netting to line the seats and backs of chairs or use under cushions to prevent sliding. This netting is more breathable than the solid sheets, which prevents moisture buildup.
