Helping a Senior Get In & Out Of The Car

Printer-Friendly Format

Helping anyone with limited mobility in and out of the car can be a tough job, especially on fabric seats.

Try placing a big, heavy plastic bag on the seat. Have the person you're helping sit down on it with his feet outside the car. The bag will slide as you swivel him more easily into place facing forward.

An extra dividend is the plastic serves as additional protection for the seat in case of spills or other accidents without calling attention to the need for protection.

Many of our older riders need some extra support while they sit down on a car seat or stand up to exit.

The armrests they put on cars these days don't give much support, and they're too low. Try rolling down the window. With the window down it's easy to grab onto the door for support. Hold the door wide open with one hand and steady your passenger with the other until he is firmly seated and can either lift his legs in or is standing steady and ready to move safely away from the car. Then roll up the window and away you go.
