Power Lift Chairs
Recliner chairs are wonderful things for people who like or need to get their feet up. Unfortunately, getting out of one is not always easy, even for younger people (ever tried it when pregnant?!)
Enter the power lift chair, which has saved the sanity of many a caregiver and given many an older person back some lost independence.
With one important caution...
Anyone using a power lift chair independently should be able to stand, get their balance, and walk without assistance. Because it's so much easier to get out of a power recliner, the chair can easily create a sense of overconfidence in people with poor balance. If you are caring for someone with poor balance who needs help walking, make sure the lift chair controller is out of reach. Make sure, too, that they have a way of calling you if they want to get out of the chair (baby monitors work well).
You can then use the controller to raise the chair and help them stand, get their balance, and then walk. This is especially important if you are caring for someone with dementia, who will not remember to call for help before trying to get out of a lift chair without help.
