So, you've decided that paying agency rates for
a home caregiver is out of the question, and you
want to hire a caregiver independently. Many
people have done so very successfully. But if
you are wise you will certainly want to do a
background check on anyone you're considering.
All too often we hear stories about elderly
people being physically or financially abused.
You don't want to add your elder to the list.
Over 4 million Americans have diabetes and
almost half will experience some form of nerve
damage. About a third of this group will develop
a complication known as peripheral neuropathy.
In patients with diabetic peripheral neuropathy,
the high blood glucose associated with diabetes
damages the nerves that go to the periphery of
the body, including the toes, feet, legs, arms,
hands and fingers. This nerve damage is usually
irreversible and can cause a variety of
symptoms.
If you could only have only one contact for local elder care resource information, that contact would be your closest senior center. Staff at the senior center will know about all but the most obscure services in their area (and often even those). If you don't live near your parent(s), keep their local senior center telephone number handy in your personal phone book. I guarantee that eventually you'll want it.
If my mother were still with us she would love this book. I would have given it to her for Christmas, and she would have read it cover to cover. It's that much fun! Did you know that if you have a plastic container that smells like old fish, a musty-smelling book, or any small item that's picked up a bad odor, you can just stick it in the freezer overnight and by morning, it'll be smelling fresh again? Or that you can use onions to remove rust stains from silverware (gotta try that one the next time I use only part of an onion!)? There really are more than 2,300 great, simple and funny uses for things we have around the house in this book. You'll save gobs of money not buying special products, and gobs of time figuring out how to deal with life's little disasters. Extraordinary Uses for Ordinary Things: 2,317 Ways to Save Money and Time
That's it for this time around. Live Well, and have a safe and happy Labor Day!
