Elder CareTips:
Mastering The Eldercare Maze

February 27, 2007

Hello all, and welcome to our new subscribers. We're glad you're here. Please let me know if there is anything in particular you would like to know about. I'll do my best to get you the information you need or find someone who can.

Now, on to the latest -

Communicating Effectively With
Insurance Companies

Eventually you'll have to deal with an insurance company, whether it's for yourself or for your parent. There are so many insurance companies. Each one has it's own schedule of what's covered and what's not, what needs pre-existing authorization and what doesn't. You can't rely on the personnel in your doctor's office or at the hospital to have all the answers. If you want the straight skinny, or if you want to resolve a problem, you'll have to take the ball into your own hands.

I used to be very hands-on, but lately I've been more
hands-off and I plan to become more hands-on and less
hands-off and hope that hands-on will become better than
hands-off, the way hands-on used to be
~ George Steinbrenner

Almost As Good As A
Pharmacist In Your Pocket

We all know that one of the best ways to lower the cost of prescriptions is to use generics whenever possible. Not sure if there's a generic equivalent for the medication you've been prescribed? Drug Digest can help you find generic alternatives. Then you can talk to the doctor about switching.

While you're there, you can also check potential interactions between medications you're taking.

Ever notice how it's a penny for your thoughts, yet you put in your two-cents? Someone is making a penny on the deal!

~ Steven Wright

Elder CareTips:
Reverse The Door

Does the door to your parent's bathroom open into the bathroom? If the entry is from a hallway, it probably does. It it's from the bedroom, it may. What would you do if he fell against the bathroom door? You'd have a hard time getting the door open without doing him more damage, that's for sure. Take a look at the door. If it opens inward, consider having it re-hung so it opens out. This might mean reconstructing the door frame. A good carpenter or handyman should be able to do the job without too much trouble, and you'll never have to worry about getting to someone trapped in the bathroom again.

Do Fish Get
Macular Degeneration?

I really don't know, but according to the studies cited in an Archives of Ophthalmology article, eating fish just once or twice a week lowered participants' risk of age-related macular degeneration by up to 40 percent. So next time you're thinking about dinner, consider salmon or tuna steak.

That's it for this time around. Talk to you again soon,
